Staff Recommendation

APPROVE construction of a 15ft x 10ft frame storage shed in rear facing northeast into the yard. Materials are cedar board and batten, wood 4-light window (reclaimed), 5-V crimped metal roofing on cross-gabled roof, concrete slab/ CMU foundation.

Queen Anne (c. 1895)

Two-story frame with wood siding . Hip roof with lower cross -gables, asphalt shingle covering, sawn wood attic vent and fishscale shingles in gable ends. Turret on corner of one -story front and side wrap -around porch with round wood fluted columns, tongue and groove porch floor. Double-hung one- over- one windows. Interior offset brick chimney. Brick foundation with formed concrete block foundation for front porch. Irregular plan. Sidelights at front entry.


STAFF FINDINGS
1) The proposed shed construction materials (board and batten and 5-V metal roofing) are appropriate for the era of the house.
2) The 10x15 size of the shed is appropriate for accessory buildings.
3) The features and details such as the cross-gabled roof, wood 4-light window, chamfered brackets on the front gable and K-braced wood doors are appropriate details for a toolshed of the period.
4 )The shed is appropriately located to the rear of the house and is close to the lot line as was typical. The approval of the ZBA will needed to approve a reduced setback.
5) Smaller work sheds were also common in the rear yards of Old North Knox. Houses in the district often had
outbuildings with roof shapes that matched the primary building on the lot.


DESIGN GUIDELINES

Recommendations:
1. Buildings resembling servants' quarters or carriage houses, work
buildings, or simple one-story garages are appropriate to be
constructed in the Old North Knox Historic District. Their size
and construction should use materials that correspond to the
original primary buildings on the lot.
