Site Info

Colonial Revival (c. 1900)

Two-story frame with weatherboard siding. Hip roof with hipped central front dormer with 3 double-hung one-over-one windows. One-story full hipped roof front porch with round wood columns with Ionic capitals, turned wood balustrade. Interior offset rear brick chimney. Concrete block foundation. Moved to current location from further east on 3rd at the time of I-40 construction.

The applicant believes the front door is not original since a second and similar door was installed in an adjacent entryway that was cut out to create an access for a separate apartment in later years. The applicant believes the front door is too deteriorated to repair.

Staff recommends that if the HZC agrees that the front door appears to be too deteriorated to repair, the replacement door must be similar to the existing door in it's configuration with the half-light above and the single panel below. The glass may be frosted or beveled to provide more privacy.

STAFF FINDINGS
1) There is no documentation to support whether or not the front door is original to the house; however, the door appears to be an early 20th-century door.

2) The existing front door is a wooden door with half-light with a small panel above the light and a single wood panel below. The bottom panel contains an appliqued wreath design (although pieces of the design are missing), similar to doors found on on a few other houses within the district. Its style and design is appropriate to the house.

3) The proposed rear balcony French doors will be visible from the alley, and the east-side door will be somewhat visible heading west on Gill Avenue.

4) Although later in style, the proposed east side and rear doors are to be installed on newly constructed elevations and are generally in keeping with the evolutionary character of the house.

5) The proposed rear balcony French doors and east-side door are not replacing original doors.

SECRETARY OF INTERIORS STANDARDS

6. Deteriorated historic features shall be repaired rather than
replaced. Where the severity of deterioration requires replacement
of a distinctive feature, the new feature shall match the old in
design, color, texture, and other visual qualities and, where
possible, materials. Replacement of missing features shall be
substantiated by documentary, physical, or pictorial evidence.

ENTRANCES

1. Entry features that should be preserved include sidelights and
transoms of plain, patterned, beveled or stained glass, fan light
windows, entablatures, and the original doors. All add character
to the structures within the Fourth and Gill Historic District.

3. Service (rear or side) entrances should not be altered to
make them appear to be formal entrances by adding
paneled doors, fanlights or sidelights.

4. Secondary entrances should be compatible with the originals in
size, scale or materials but should not give the appearance of a
primary entrance.
.
7. Missing doors should be replaced with new doors appropriate
for the style and period of the building. In replacing missing
original doors, replacement doors should mimic doors typical
for that architectural style, including materials, glazing, and pane
configuration.
