Site Info

Ranch (1944)

One story frame with low pitched end gable roof with asphalt shingle roof covering. Interior off center rear brick chimney. Wall covering of concrete block replicating oversize shingles. Brick foundation. Rectangular plan. Uncovered stoop at front entry.

Primary Structure: Proposed additions to primary structure will add to gabled additions to front of house, both visible from Tazewell Pike, and will also add two dormers at northeast end. The additions will be covered in wood shingles to suggest the wall covering of the original structure. Oversize louvered attic vents will appear at the front facing gable end of each addition.

Secondary Structure: The additions proposed to the rear building are not visible from Tazewell Pike, but also meet the design guidelines. They continue the present architectural form of the building, adding needed floor space, while retaining the roof form and appearance of windows and wall cladding current appearing on the building.

The proposed additions to the primary structure will insert two roof features recommended in the design guidelines - offsetting gables and dormer windows (pg. 7, Design Guidelines).

The adopted design guidelines do state that new additions should be made to the sides or rear of the existing buildings, and if made to the front should not comprise more than one-quarter of the front elevation. These additions will comprise approximately fifty percent of the front elevation, and are being made to the front of the house. However, the additions enhance the disctiveness of the existing house, adding interest and appropriate roof forms, while recognizing the distinctive wall cladding.
