Fourth and Gill H-1: Level IV

5-L-08-HZ

Staff Recommendation

APPROVE demolition of garage and breezeway only. These portions of the building are not significant and alter the appearance of the historic house, in addition to being a public hazard.

Applicant Request

Level IV. Demolition or relocation of contributing structure

Demolition of non-contributing addition on west side of house, including garage/storage building, joined to historic house by breezeway.

Site Info

Colonial Revival (c.1900)

Two story frame with weatherboard wall covering. Hip roof with hipped front dormer with three double hung one over one windows. One over one double hung windows. One story full hipped roof front porch with round wood columns with Ionic capitals, turned wood balustrade. Interior offset rear brick chimney. Concrete block foundation. Rectangular plan. House reportedly moved to current location from further east on Third Avenue at time of I-40 construction, when a rear breezeway and attached gable roof garage were added to the property along with a rear, exterior wood stair.

Garage and attached breezeway have not achieved significance, and are in extremely poor condition, creating a hazard to the general public and attached property on the west.
