Commercial Vernacular (c.1885)

Two story brick building with severely altered front façade, infilled three bay second story, altered, first story.

Brickwork on the second story of this building illustrates at least five major repair efforts in the past. Very little of the second story is original, with the exception of the piers that divide the second story into three bays. The work previously approved (submitted by Goss, Pearcy, Goss) was improperly executed, and replacement windows procured to fill the three bays were too large; brick cuts made to accommodate them compromised the structural integrity of the building. On April 3, a stop work order was issued to require a structural engineer's opinion of the best way to secure the building. On April 4, that opinion was obtained and it was determined to rebuild a large part of the second story façade, inserting an angle iron above the proposed windows, with bracing attached to the roof joists, and to infill between the piers with recessed brick panels, each of which will contain one centered 38" wide x 57" tall double hung wood window, topped by an 20-24" tall framed glass transom, resulting in a total window opening height of 38" x approximately 72" tall opening, an appropriate scale that will blend with the other second story windows on Market Square.
