Staff Recommendation

APPROVE CERTIFICATE NO. 32204AGEN. The proposed building blends with adjacent buildings, and the site itself is not significant for its architecture, but for its historical association with the underground railroad.

Site Info

Vacant land.

This property was the purported site of an underground-railroad affiliated location. The building formerly located on the site (a synagogue) was not the building associated with the underground railroad. It was demolished sometime prior to 1982.

This site was apparently occupied by a synagogue that post-dated the underground railroad activities associated with the site. That building was demolished sometime prior to 1983. No record exists of an approval for demolition by the Knoxville Historic Zoning Commission, and the name of the person conducting the demolition is not known. However, it was not that building that was significant, but the site. It would be possible to remove the designation from the property, but to do so would mean that the record of its historical association could be lost.
