Staff Recommendation

APPROVE Certificate No. 1003084&G. Proposed addition to front porch will enhance, rather than conflict with the building's architectural design, by making the porch large enough to provide exterior seating. The original porch design is unknown.


Applicant Request

Level II. Replacement/repair

Increase size of front porch with hexagonal side addition 5 feet deep from edge of existing porch. Porch addition to travel between 5 and 6 feet down side of building. Porch roof to be supported by square wood columns to match existing, with sawn wood brackets, balustrade of edge butted 1x4 or 1x6 boards with secondary sawn pattern, wood t&g porch floor, bead board ceiling, applied trim feature above the bay window; increase overhang above porch to match depth of overhang existing above bay window. Brick foundation to match existing brick foundation. Porch celing to to be either shingles or metal standing seam.

Commission instruction to have heavy staff involvement in reviewing proposed brackets and extending beam across façade as covering is removed. DID NOT ALLOW SHUTTERS.

Neoclassical with Queen Anne influence (c.1905)

Two story frame with asbestos shingle wall covering. Hip roof with asphalt shingle roof covering. Two over one double hung windows. One story one-half front porch, recessed, with replacement square wood columns and original square engaged pilasters, tongue and groove porch floor and bead board ceiling, sawn wood balustrade. Interior offset brick chimney. Brick foundation. Irregular plan. One story projecting square bay on front elevation. Original paneled front entry door with half-view glass. Side door on front porch with ladder back panels.


Extending the beam above the bay will improve the appearance of the front façade, while providing some additional protection from the rain. Replacement columns will improve the porch's appearance, as will the addition of brackets and the embellishment proposed to be located over the bay window.
