Site Info

Victorian Vernacular Commercial (c.1910)

Bradley's Food Market. 501 Arthur. Two story frame two bay building with brick veneer wall covering. Front gable roof with asphalt shingle covering, circular sawn wood attic vents and shingles in front gable. Double hung three over one windows in upper residential portion, altered c.1970s storefront in downstairs commercial portion. Two story front porch with second story open balcony supported with round metal posts, altered sawn wood balustrade. Brick foundation. Rectangular plan.

The applicant proposes to reconstruct a gable end second story roof over the currently uncovered second story deck that currently exists and is inappropriate and unoriginal. The second story deck will provide a covered ground floor porch, the space for which currently exists, and to remove the c.1970's storefront, repairing as necessary, and installing arched transom openings and a full view glass door that will return the two bay division to the front façade. Materials are appropriate.

RECOMMEND DENIAL of proposal to paint brick on first floor, retaining current exposed brick.
