Old North Knoxville H-1: Level II

Staff Recommendation

Current wood siding is not a hallmark of the Minimal Traditional style, is in bad condition and must be replaced, and is not available on the market. Lap wood siding will be more appropriate for 1129 Harvey and neighboring houses.

Applicant Request

Level II. Replacement/repair
Siding

Replace oversize, deteriorated siding with 4-5" lap poplar siding; patterned wood shingles in gable ends, corner boards, trim, fascia and soffit.

Site Info

Minimal Traditional (c.1952)

One story frame with wide board shiplap wood siding and Masonite at gable ends; Side gable roof with asphalt single roof covering and louvered wood attic vent. Double hung six over six and four over four windows. One story gabled portico with sawn "lattice" effect columns. Interior offset brick chimney. Concrete block foundation. Rectangular plan.

According to the other, the siding was initially developed for use by Jim Walters Homes. Its design, and possibly the manner of manufacturing, have made it extremely susceptible to rot and deterioration, and it has degraded to the point that it will not hold paint and is not repairable. Applicant wishes to replace it with a better quality wood siding, more in keeping with other houses in the district.
