COVID-19 Updates

Our operating plan continues to prioritize the health of Planning staff and the public while ensuring our work is uninterrupted.

Updated April 30, 2021

To do this, we have reduced the number of staff working on-site, staggered scheduling of staff, set parameters for interacting with the public, and continue to modify aspects of work-related activities as necessary.

While our customer service counter remains open, all staff are communicating via email, telephone, and virtual meetings to limit in-person meetings. People needing in-person assistance should contact staff to make an appointment and understand that face-to-face interactions will occur at the front counter only. Individuals will not be allowed beyond that point and no in-person group meetings will be held at this time.

Customer Service Functions

All business can be handled over the phone, via email, or by our online forms. Submit completed applications to applications@knoxplanning.org. Staff will review the submission and, when deemed complete, contact you with instructions on how to provide payment.

Digital Signatures

Certifications for addressing, zoning, and final subdivision plat approvals will be completed with digital signatures.

For final subdivisions, email a pdf of the plat to plats@knoxplanning.org. We will work quickly to get your plat signed and sent back to you. Please note, we are unable to sign plats until all other certifications are signed. If you have any questions or concerns please email plats@knoxplanning.org or call at 865-215-3193.

Front Counter

Staffing at our front counter is limited, and measures have been taken to protect both staff and the public, including:

  • Installation of plexiglass screens,
  • Required use of face coverings by staff and customers,
  • Installation of signage advising online services and rules for safety,
  • Maintaining a log of names of people with whom front counter staff interact face-to-face, and
  • Increased cleaning of the front counter.

*These measures were crafted with guidance from the City of Knoxville, Knox County, the Knox County Health Department, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Planning will continue to operate by these standards until May 28, 2021. If certain COVID-19 case metrics fail to meet local guidelines for public safety, that period may be extended further.

All Public Meetings to be Held In Person

Both the Agenda Review (5/11) and Planning Commission (5/13) meetings will be held in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building.

  • We want to make sure everyone can access the meeting. If you are interested in watching the Planning Commission meeting remotely, it will be available via CTV, and YouTube.
  • Comments on specific agenda items should be submitted no later than 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday before the meeting at knoxplanning.org/share.
  • If you are not an applicant and you are interested in speaking during the meeting about a specific agenda item, please sign up to speak at knoxplanning.org/act no later than 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday before the meeting.

*Despite our new methods for conducting business, we assure you that we will continue to process applications, assist customers, and serve the community through this challenging time.
