Citizens Meet Planners to Talk About One Year Plan Updates

Meetings were held at three locations across the City and offered residents a chance to weigh in on some upcoming changes.

The series kicked off on Tuesday, February 6 at Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church.

MPC planners met with residents from West and Northwest areas of the city to talk about upcoming changes to the One Year Plan, a tool that helps city officials make decisions about zoning and land use.

MPC staff presented proposed plan changes to an audience of 15 people, then opened the floor to citizen input.

The crowd was small, but their questions and concerns were big.

Citizens and planners talked about recently proposed development on Broome Road in West Hills, the future of the Tennova Hospital site on Middlebrook Pike, the role of zoning and plans, impact of the hillside protection area, and the seeming misalignment between zoning and planning patterns.

The second meeting was held on Monday, February 12 when MPC staff joined 26 community members from the South Knoxville area at Flenniken Landing. The meeting was broadcast live and the recording can be seen below, courtesy of Community Television.

After discussing proposed plan changes, the floor was opened to community input. Attendees were interested in how to proceed with a general rezoning, how Recode Knoxville will address the One Year Plan, and the zoning of their property and what those codes allow.

The final meeting took place on Thursday, February 15, at New Harvest Park and focused on the North, East, and Central areas. Nineteen people were in attendance. The discussion focused on how Recode Knoxville will be implemented, the zoning of attendees’ property and neighboring property, where and how to access information about the One Year Plan and MPC, and questions about the industrial proposed land use adjacent to Inskip Elementary and along Mitchell Street.

These open meetings were a great way for residents to get involved in planning for their neighborhoods!

Opportunities like these allow the community to guide future growth in their area, learn about the planning process, and meet local decision-makers.
