Southwest County Sector Plan Update Kicks Off

We want to hear from you! Community meetings are scheduled and an online survey are available to share your thoughts on the future of the Southwest Sector.

The Southwest County Sector Plan was last updated in 2005, and in the 10 or so years that have passed, the area has seen a lot of change. New to the community are retail complexes like Northshore Town Center, the Landings at Cedar Bluff, and Sherrill Hill. Residential subdivisions have opened throughout the sector, with hundreds of new homes in the Westland and Bluegrass communities. Road and access improvements at Northshore Drive and Pellissippi Parkway were completed, and a new Northshore Elementary School opened to serve the area’s growing population of school children.

As might be gathered by that short list of new investment, the Southwest Sector is the fastest growing sector in Knox County. In terms of population alone, more than 30,000 new residents moved in over the past 10 years.

With so much growth, it is imperative that planners take a close look at current and future needs for land use, transportation, and community facilities. But MPC’s planners want Knox County residents to bring their ideas to the table to contribute to the process of updating the plan that will guide the sector for the next 15 years.

There are several opportunities to participate in the update:

Your Input

Fill out an online survey.
Visit the project website and complete a survey that will ask for your ideas and opinions. What we hear from you in the survey will help make our public meetings more productive.

Host a planner!
An MPC staff planner will come to your community or homeowners or church meeting to make a presentation and gather input. Contact MPC’s Jeff Archer (jeff.archer@knoxmpc.org) for more information.

Community Input
MPC staff will use the input gathered from meetings and surveys to draw up a draft plan. That draft will be presented to the public for review and comment. The final plan will come later in the process and be presented for adoption by the Planning Commission, Knoxville City Council, and Knox County Commission.

Review sector background report

Before you attend a meeting or take the survey, you can review the Southwest County Sector’s Background Report which describes major changes in the sector since the plan was last updated. The report provides maps and data about the area’s land use, parks, roads, civic centers, and public services.

Questions and comments about the Southwest County Sector Plan are encouraged and may be directed to Jeff Archer at 215-2500 or jeff.archer@knoxmpc.org.

About Sector Plans

Sector plans provide recommendations for land use, community facilities, and transportation systems across 12 geographic divisions of Knox County. They focus on applying goals from the Knoxville-Knox County General Plan 2033 to guide land use and development over a 15-year period. And for the near term, five-year capital improvements and implementation programs also are provided in each sector plan.
