In March 2016, a Sidewalk Committee was formed to help draft a comprehensive sidewalk policy for the City of Knoxville and Knox County that would set requirements for walkability and pedestrian facilities associated with new development and redevelopment.
An ad hoc committee of four MPC Commissioner was formed by MPC Executive Director Gerald Green and MPC Chair Rebecca Longmire. The committee receives input from MPC staff, with the assistance of City of Knoxville Engineering Department and Knox County Engineering and Public Works.
The committee met in April 2016, to review information compiled by MPC staff with the assistance of City of Knoxville Engineering Department and Knox County Engineering and Public Works staff. At this meeting, the committee accepted the information and agrees with staff that more research was needed. Since April, staff have been compiling additional information with a goal of providing a recommended comprehensive sidewalk policy to the committee by mid-October.
The committee met in December 2016 to gather feedback on a draft walkability ordinance.
