General Information

Categories

Development Achievement
Awards may be given in the following development categories:

  1. Residential
    Includes both single-family and multi-family projects.
  2. Commercial/Industrial/Office
    Includes retail establishments, shopping centers, industrial/warehouse development, office buildings and office parks
  3. Historic Restoration
    Is the restoration of historic structures
  4. Renovation
    Is the rehabilitation of non-historic properties, including the reuse of such buildings for new purposes
  5. Special Use
    Includes, but is not limited to, the following: parks, schools, and churches

Environmental Sustainability
While energy and environmental conservation are considered in all categories, this award may be given for an exemplary project that meets the environmental sustainability criteria.

Neighborhood Achievement
This award may be given to a group that has promoted planning excellence through its involvement with education, communication, or the development of projects or plans.

More than one award may be presented in each category.

 

Review Criteria
All projects will be judged by the following criteria. Those projects that are nominated under the environmental sustainability category must be exemplary in meeting the environmental sustainability criteria.

Development Criteria

  • Quality of design and aesthetics
  • Innovative design that could serve as a model
  • Compatibility with neighboring land uses
  • Catalyst for positive change in the area
  • Adherence to adopted plans
  • Respect for historic resources
  • Conservation of environmental resources, such as ridges, streams and open space
  • Restoration and enhancement of natural settings
  • Creating walkable, pedestrian-friendly places
  • Impacts in reducing automobile reliance and urban sprawl
  • Involvement of community interests
  • Support in building strong neighborhoods
  • Enhancement of economic well-being

Environmental Sustainability Criteria

  • Conservation of environmental resources, such as forested ridges, streams, and wetlands
  • Employing energy conservation or renewable energy sources
  • Use of green building principles and technologies
  • Limiting site disturbance or reuse of a previously developed site

Eligibility

To be considered for the 2009 Excellence Awards, the project or plan must be located in Knox County (excluding the Town of Farragut), and must have been completed after 2005.
The project must be fully completed to be considered.

 

Nominations

Nominations for the 2009 Excellence Awards closed on April 1. We will begin accepting nominations for the 2010 awards in the spring of 2010.

 

Awards Banquet

Award recipients will be recognized at a banquet in August. Details will be posted here when available.
